unique destinations

It is one if the rarest and most unique destinations, making it a must for any Maui visitor. The two-lane route, also known as Hāna Highway, connects Kahului with the tiny town of Hana in east Maui, offering mesmerizing and scenic views, plenty of activities, and some of Hawaii’s most beautiful and diverse habitats along the way. Read on to ready yourself with knowledge and tips on how you can maximize your trip to this beautiful island of Maui.

The Experience

give me a title

Many tourists opt to drive the long and winding road themselves. This can take up to 12 hours of your day, with the slow drive leaving you and your passengers tired. You will encounter many twists and turns along the way, taking at least 3 hours, in each direction, to drive the curvy route, and that doesn’t include any stops. Expect the route to get very narrow and requiring much attention, as you will cross over fifty-nine bridges, forty-six of which are only a single lane wide. The 52 miles has over 600 curves, making maneuvering this winding road a demanding task, and can cause car sickness, depending upon the driver’s skill.

Small group trips offer a safe, comfortable, air-conditioned ride via van or mini-coach with an expert tour guide giving you the best stories on the history and legends of the Valley Isle, while a private tour will include simply a driver, giving you the power to make as many stops anywhere you want. Despite the narrow road’s name, most tours continue further south, past Hana Town to Kipahulu to the Seven Sacred Pools of Oheo, before turning around and returning to Kahului. Some continue their drive on the back roads, going through Kaupo and Kula, then back to Kahului.

The Road to Hana is the Attraction

01 Relax

The Road to Hana itself is more beautiful than the ‘destination’. Therefore, in order to immerse yourself in the splendor of this journey, you need to relax, clear your head and sit back.

02 Visit

Some of the sights to visit on your Hana adventure are the Ho’okipa Lookout, the famous Seven Sacred Pools, the Twin Falls waterfalls, Honomanu Bay, the two arboretums, the Hana Lava Tube, and Wai’anapanapa State Park

03 Enjoy

For a piece of history, make a stop at Palapala Ho’omau Church, set on the coast in Kipahulu, where famous aviator Charles Lindbergh is buried. The town of Hana itself is tiny but lovely, and has many nice beaches

Things to Do While Touring Hana

Stop at the Oheo Gulch to take a dip in the Seven Sacred Pools, or enjoy a range of short hikes through tropical rainforest, such as the four-mile Pipiwai Trail, a part of Haleakala National Park. If weather permits, take in the views at Keanae Lookout; rappel one of the beautiful waterfalls; zipline over a jungle canopy on the Northshore; grab lunch in Paia Town; and check out ancient lava formations in the Ka’eleku Cavern. You can also take to the skies to see the Hana Highway on a helicopter tour or a day trip from Oahu, flight costs included.

Some travelers opt to create their own trip along this famous road, spending the night in Hana before heading back to the west side of the island. If you’re interested in cycling, you can either rent a bike and go on your own, or book a cycling tour.

Amenities & Accessibility

Here are a few things to know before you go:

1. Those considering the self-guided option should note that certain rental car companies don’t allow their vehicles on the road to or past Hana, due to some of the unfinished rocky roads.

2. Some rock climbing may be required to access the waterfalls at the Seven Sacred Pools; however, Wai’anapanapa State Park has worked to improve its pathways for safer and more comfortable hiking throughout the area.

3. Not all guided day-trips include meals, so consider bringing a picnic lunch to enjoy at a scenic stop en route. Some options do include a continental breakfast for your early start.

4. Most self-driving tourists complain afterwards about the difficulty of navigating this stressful road, which has left them with little energy or ability to enjoy the magic of the moment. By choosing a tour company, you automatically free your mind and body from the stress of driving and immerse yourself in a whole new world of adventure with spectacular views!
